Do you remember what it felt like to play?<\/strong><\/p>\n It was a spontaneous expression of joy.<\/p>\n You were firmly anchored in the present moment and you didn\u2019t (for one second) worry if you were playing the \u2018right\u2019 way or the \u2018wrong\u2019 way.<\/p>\n You didn\u2019t think about how to play \u2013 you just did it.<\/p>\n You were completely free; exploring, experimenting and taking risks.<\/p>\n You lost track of time and were in the flow.<\/em><\/p>\n Aaaaahhhh<\/em>\u2026now you remember.<\/strong><\/p>\n It doesn\u2019t get much better than that.<\/p>\n But somehow we forget how to play or think play is just for kids and has no place in our busy, responsibility filled lives.<\/p>\n IS PLAY THE MISSING PIECE?<\/strong><\/p>\n It might sound strange, but I regularly recommend play to coaching clients. There\u2019s always a moment of silence after I say, \u201cThis week add more play to your day!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cPlay??\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s followed by a perplexed, questioning, furrowed brow expression that says, Seriously??<\/p>\n Seriously.<\/p>\n Play helps us connect with the most authentic, elemental part of ourselves where our deepest desires live. You can only get there by letting go and letting yourself have fun. Without sufficient play, everything health wise suffers \u2013 including cravings, sleep and stress. The more play in your life, the better you\u2019ll feel in your body and soul.<\/p>\n HOW DO WE DEFINE PLAYFULNESS?<\/strong><\/p>\n Cheerfulness, humour, creativity and expressiveness are defining characteristics of playfulness. When you play you\u2019re without fear, open to the unexpected and willing to embrace new behaviors. Playing takes you out of your head and allows your heart to take the lead. Play lets you step into action, and you need to act to make any desired change in your life.<\/p>\n \u00a0\u201cPlay is something done for its own sake,\u201d<\/em> says Dr. Stuart Brown, head of the nonprofit National Institute for Play<\/a>. It\u2019s voluntary, its pleasurable, it offers a sense of engagement, it takes you out of time where the act is more important than the outcome.<\/p>\n Play opens our hearts, allowing us to take risks and make changes.<\/p><\/div>\n HOW DO WE GET MORE PLAY IN OUR LIVES?<\/strong><\/p>\n Play becomes an important strategy for making changes in your life because it gets you out of your comfort zones allows a reset of your attitude in affirmative, creative, solution-oriented ways. What other activity begs you to surrender so wholeheartedly without having any idea about the outcome? Especially for perfectionist type A\u2019s play is an opportunity let go and have fun.<\/p>\n You can incorporate play anywhere, even in places you might now consider.<\/p>\n SHOULDN\u2019T BEING HEALTHY ALSO BE FUN?<\/strong><\/p>\n As a society we are brainwashed to think we must work really hard and possibly even suffer to get healthy or bring good into our lives. This just isn\u2019t true. Playfulness becomes the key to health and happiness.<\/p>\n Play can help us:<\/strong><\/p>\n Trust others.<\/p>\n Get unstuck.<\/p>\n Destress.<\/p>\n Break habits and make changes.<\/p>\n Become more creative.<\/p>\n Feel alive we feel more fully engaged sand find pure joy.<\/p>\n Love ourselves.<\/p>\n WHY DO WE STOP PLAYING WHEN WE GET OLDER?<\/strong><\/p>\n We fill our lives up with \u2018to-dos.\u2019 We take on too much. We overwork. \u00a0The inner critic tells us others will somehow find us unacceptable if we play. Type A\u2019s want to control everything\u00a0 and play demands surrender.<\/p>\n Make a list of what you loved to do as a kid.
