We love our rituals….they make us feel safe. If you think about it we have rituals for everything we do…unwinding at the end of the day, getting ready for bed, brushing our teeth, reading the paper, beginning our day, getting dressed….we are ritual driven! We create rituals that, on one hand, allow us to get things done but on the other stop us from exploring and generating new thought. We actually become our rituals!

But we’re on a 30 day adventure so…Rituals be Gone!

Dr. Joe Dispenza is the author of a book called, “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself”. He’s been quoted as saying, “by the time we are 35 years old we reach a point where our personality becomes a set of memorized behaviours (rituals) and emotional reactions that run like an automated program.” What??!! If ever there was a time to shake things up it is NOW! Dr. Dispenza also says that the ultimate goal when seeking growth is to break the habit of being ourselves. It is tricky but the key is to set an intention and match the behaviour to it. Hmmm……that sounds like something for the 30 Day Adventure!

Identify the many rituals that make up your day. Pick one to play with.

I’m going with the first one of the day…..morning coffee and the paper. If this is one of yours do you ‘execute’ like I do? Do you do it at exactly the same time every day? Sit in exactly the same place? Read paper in exactly the same order…..ignoring some sections, scanning others and going in depth with favourites? Geeez…..I had no idea how deeply entrenched I was!

TODAY …. Switch it up! If you’ve chosen coffee and paper consciously pick a new time (earlier or later). Pick a new location. Read (in depth) sections of the newspaper you normally wouldn’t pay much attention to be it sports, business, Op/Ed, fashion, travel, gardening etc. The coffee has to go too? Ugh…ok how’s green tea?

I’m betting the day kicks off with a few new thoughts and a slightly different perspective. Interesting…
