For the last few years I’ve approached New Year’s resolution making differently. Instead of the traditional getting fit, losing weight or eating healthier I’ve identified 3 words that bring to life my hopes, goals and intentions. The simplicity of this (for me) packs intense punch. The words have acted as inspiration, a focus point, a lighthouse through stormy seas and as a reminder to stay open during a time of change. Sometimes coming up with the 3 words has required deep thought and reflection and other times they are top of mind and tip of tongue. Like this year.

To stay mindful of my words, I post them – front and center where I see them every day. At the end of each month I review, reflecting on how /if the words have embodied life.

Over the years the words have been dramatically different… grow stretch become/simplify clarity focus/ask listen act….but when I look back I can see how positively the 3 words shaped each year.

With heart valve surgery to take place in the next few months my priorities are clear and so are my words. It’s funny how life gives us what we need. My words came easily….trust peace gratitude.

TRUST – those who love me will say with a smile that I’m a control freak. Ok… I do give best efforts to managing and ‘controlling’ my world. This year I embrace trust … letting go of things and trusting everything is as it should be.

PEACE- my mind and body are constantly active. I discovered meditation last fall. I love the peace and the sense of comfort it gives me…I want to walk further and further down this path.

GRATITUDE – being grateful for the blessings in my life fills my heart… focusing on ordinary moments…the small things we often overlook ….gives me the most joy. I want to continue to build my daily gratitude practice.

These 3 words have already changed my life I’m excited to see what a year’s worth of focus will look like.
