How can I live my best life?

How can I make my life more meaningful?

What am I here to do?

The Questions

These are questions that often come up on the Red Shoe blog and in the workshops I facilitate. Lately I’ve been noticing a trend. The ages of the women asking these questions is getting younger and younger. When I first started the Red Shoe Zone I was speaking with women 50+. Now I’m engaging in these conversations with women in their early 30’s. Which tells me the desire for meaning in our lives has become much more immediate.

The Dash

I was recently reminded of the poem The Dash written by Linda Ellis in 1996.

The dash is a metaphor the time between birth and death, all the time we have been on this earth. It is one of the most popular poems in the world. It reminds us to be mindful that we’re only on earth for a little while and what truly matters is how we live, love and how we spend our dash.

What The Dash represents

The Dash represents the endless laughter, pools of tears, moment of celebration, twisted pangs of humiliation, errands run, countless moments forgotten, soil tilled, presents wrapped, movies watched, births, deaths, parties, wars and peace. And all the delicious moments in between.

I have never considered what year will be placed after my dash. It’s certain that there will be one someday, but I for now I’m asking myself….

“What does my dash look like?

""

How will you spend your time?

How many moments will I be fully present to?

How many adventures will be had?

How many hearts will be touched?

How many meals enjoyed with family and friends?

How many of my own wishes will I make come true?

The older I get the more I bask in these questions simply because it seems to put everything in perspective for me. One thing I know the less I fret the more fun I have.

""

Time with friends feeds the soul.

The more fun I have the more this place seems full of possibilities and joy. Of course, there are plenty of things to worry about. Any yet, we are here dancing in the dash, doing best to make the most of the time we have here on this planet sine we never know when our time to leave will come.

While you are here friends consider who you want to be, what you truly want.

What would you do?

What would you do if you knew you could not fail? What letter would you write? What song who you sing?

""What trip would you take? What idea would you launch? What check would you write? What dog would you rescue? What class would you take? What problem would you solve? What mountain would you climb? What contest would you enter? What habit would you break? What lesson would you learn? What friend would you call? What revolution would you start?

It’s your dash you can do whatever you like.

Food for thought:)

Please share with a friend who needs to hear.

Love, Cheryl x
